Visit with Ann Whitford Paul

What a week! On Thursday, Ann came to Madison for a high school class reunion and book signing. She kindly agreed to meet with our illustrator/author critique group and talk with us about our favorite topic – picture books! Ann is known for writing over 20 children’s picture books, plus one of my favorite books, Writing Picture Books. She will be on the faculty of the SCBWI Conference in LA this August.

We met at a bookstore kiddy corner from the former location of my dad’s music store. Even though a thunderstorm pummeled State Street, Ann came through the door cheerfully, and was glad to meet our illustrator/author critique group. She told us about her writing career, and her new books that will be published soon. When asked about how she selects the perfect sounding words in her story, she suggested copying the text of other writers to learn the rhythm and sounds of their words. In addition, she stressed the importance of a critique group. She still meets with hers, and it has some of the original members!

If you’re lucky enough to go to the SCBWI Conference in L.A., be sure to attend her seminar.  Also, you can visit her website and subscribe to her newsletter at

Happy writing!
